NEW ALBUM: Claude Bolling

Stepping out of my comfort zone, taking on new challenges - that was the state of mind I was in before embarking on this major project: the recording of Claude Bolling's complete works for flute and jazz piano trio. Like Jean-Pierre Rampal at the time, I had never had the opportunity to play with jazz musicians. Bolling's work allows me to explore this new musical formation, and I'm delighted to dive right in! Special thanks to Uncle Martin Painchaud who, by dint of humming the opening bars of Baroque and Blue to me at family gatherings, finally convinced me to embrace this fascinating project and embark on this new adventure. However, before taking the plunge, I needed to get to grips with this unfamiliar music. It was after the release of the album Flûte passion : Mozart that I began intensive score analysis and listening to Claude Bolling's recordings, all the while walking my little Mozart dog! After a while, I heard and felt inside me what my interpretation of the work that conquered the world in the 70s and 80s would be. All that remained was to find the right musicians! A real challenge, since the "classical-jazz" mix requires special skills. I had to find musicians who were well-versed in classical technique and capable of improvising with great ease. Bernard was the first musician I contacted, thanks to the kind words of harpist Valérie Milot. After discussing my needs and musical vision, Bernard introduced me to Dominic and Jonathan to complete the jazz trio. From the very first rehearsal, I was enchanted and the project was born. I dedicate this series of albums to my husband, Jeannot Painchaud, and my children, Alicia and Samuel, who encourage me in my moments of doubt and give me wings. Happy listening, happy rediscovery!

Flute Passion - Mozart

Ever since I was a little girl, Mozart's music has accompanied me and made me happy, whether listening to it, playing it or whistling it! As soon as the pandemic began, Mozart became a permanent fixture in my home. To dispel anxiety, insecurity and incomprehension, I listened to this joyful, melodious music, connected to what's deepest within us, to escape and live in the present moment. That's when this new project was born. The need to express myself and give love and hope in my own way was stronger than my sense of anxiety about the future. Through this music, I offer you a little tenderness, a little sweetness and, I hope, a little joy. May this music bring you as much well-being as it has brought me. Happy listening!

Flute Passion - Bach

Article by Laurence Gauvin - PAN360 - March 2020

Precision and direction are two words more than appropriate to describe this second album in the Flûte Passion series, which features three Quebec artists well established in the local music scene: Nadia Labrie, Camille Paquette-Roy and Luc Beauséjour. Nadia Labrie is a flutist with a master's degree in performance from the Université de Montréal and a first prize with great distinction from the Conservatoire de Québec. Camille Paquette-Roy has a similar background, holding a diploma from the Conservatoire de Trois-Rivières and a master's degree in performance from McGill University. Both women are accompanied on piano by Luc Beauséjour, an early music specialist and director of the baroque music workshop at Université de Montréal, among others. This trio offers us the chance to discover key works from Johann Sebastian Bach's repertoire of flute sonatas. The communion between the three musicians - which is audible - makes the interpretation of these three sonatas highly interesting. The precision of the flute attacks, the lightness of the cello bow and the perfect balance of the piano accompaniment allow us to float to the sound of this ethereal music. The album closes with the Partita for solo flute in A minor by the same composer, leaving us to appreciate Nadia Labrie's flawless instrumental technique and round sound.

Flute Passion: Schubert

I've been thinking about this recording project for several years now. Ever since I played Schubert's Introduction and Variations in my final exams at the Conservatoire over 20 years ago, I've wanted to record Schubert's most beautiful works. What's more, at that time and for years afterwards, I enjoyed reading the Arpeggione - a work requiring great breath control - without ever having the opportunity to play it in recital. This remained nothing more than a desire, until I felt a great need to make this flute repertoire better known. To accompany me in this adventure, I had to find a talented and virtuoso pianist, as the Introduction and Variations is a real challenge for both instrumentalists!

I immediately thought of Mathieu Gaudet, a pianist with a passion for Schubert's music and a long-standing friend with whom I studied at the Rimouski Conservatory. It was also during these years that I discovered the lieder cycle La Belle Meunière, which accompanied me through the long nights I spent studying Natural Sciences. This music has always inspired me, which is why I present you with my favorites in my version for flute and piano. Schubert's music is transcendent, inspiring, passionate, so close to the soul, the voice and the breath of life. I invite you to let yourself be transported by this music. Happy listening!
